COWPENS NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD
With so many Civil War sites in the South Carolina and North Carolina, it can be easy to forget that South Carolina played a critical role in helping to defeat the British during The Revolutionary War.
To make the most of your visit to Cowpens National Battlefield, we suggest stopping at the visitor's center to watch an 18-minute video that provides a great base of knowledge for your battlefield experience. The film, shown on the hour, is quite interesting. If you arrive a little before the hour, you will have time to tour the small museum to learn more from the displays and artifacts. Interestingly, the battle lasted only about as long as the film, and was the turning point of the Revolutionary War in the South.
There is a 1.3-mile loop walking trail of the battlefield that begins behind the visitor's center. It takes about 45 minutes to walk the trail and read all the trail side information.
There is also a one-way 3.8-mile driving loop that goes around the perimeter of the battlefield. It has wayside stops with explanatory signs.
A picnic area is available.
If you are in the area or on your way to Asheville, NC from the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport, make this a stop. It is a nice surprise, especially if you love history.
